With summer in full swing it might feel like the kids have just finished the school year, but we all know how quickly time flies when you’re having fun. When it comes to back to school, there’s lot’s to think about – clothes, supplies, sports and club equipment. So it’s the perfect time to purge the old and start getting organized.

The Bedroom

For the most part, kids just need more shelving. So create more space by adding a second shelf, or hanging bar. It’s an inexpensive way of creating more space. Most parents nowadays want their kids’ screen time spent out in the open, it’s still a good idea to make room for a small desk with space for supplies and a lamp for studying. It doesn’t have to be fancy, and in some cases it can be built into a nook or area in the bedroom.

  • Add shelving space to keep clothes off the floor
  • Install a second hanging bar, which can be used to hang sports uniforms
  • Create an area for a small desk that can store the basics, building it into a nook is ideal

Mudroom

This room has different names depending on where you live, but it’s the place where your family enters and leaves the home. And as anyone with a busy family knows, this area can quickly become a disaster. But there a few easy things you can do to make that space more functional. The simplest idea is to have a place where you can store shoes, boots, skates and cleats. The key is to keep them off the floor. We recommend a bench with storage or a cubby for the kids to sit and take off their shoes and place them in afterward. Above the bench, install some hooks so they can hang their coats and knapsacks. You can also use baskets instead of drawers if they want to see what’s inside.

  • Keep things off the floor
Use a seating bench with cubby or storage space for shoes and accessories
  • Install hooks above to hang coats and bags
